Join MNA archaeologist Don Keller for a six-day backpack into one of southern Utah’s most elegant canyons. Slickhorn Canyon offers a deep sandstone oasis rich in scenery, prehistoric rock art, ancestral cliff dwellings, lush springs and towering canyon walls that give this canyon hike its own intriguing character. Our backpacking schedule through this twenty-mile loop hike into remote wilderness will offer many opportunities for off-trail exploration, discovery, and learning, and ample time for rest, discussions, and group interaction. Cost includes transportation from MNA, delicious camp meals, and permits. Readings, weather information, and equipment recommendations will be provided prior to our trip.

Day 1

Depart from MNA at 7:00 am. Drive to Kane Gulch Ranger Station for check-in. Begin backpack down Trail Canyon about 3 miles down to lower Trail Canyon near junction with Slickhorn Gulch to first camp.

Day 2

Interpretive visits to prehistoric cliff dwelling site in lower Trail Canyon and rock art location at junction with Slickhorn Gulch. Evening discussion and interpretation of regional natural and cultural history.

Day 3

Long day hike down Slickhorn Gulch with interpretive visits to Basketmaker alcove site and rock art locations along the way. Return to junction campsite for third camp.

Day 4

Hike about 4 miles, past the trail and “spring” side canyons, to the northernmost junction and fourth camp. Explore side canyon northeastward from camp.

Day 5

Day hike northward to head of canyon with interpretive visit to prehistoric cliff dwelling kiva site. Return to junction with “spring” canyon and then eastward up canyon to fifth night’s camp near spring. Last evening interpretation and wrap-up.

Day 6

Backpack about 3 or 4 miles up and out of canyon to trailhead. Return to Flagstaff by 5:30 pm.

Cancellations must be received in writing by mail, fax, or email. If notice of cancellation is received before 30 days prior to departure, trip fees will be refunded less a $200.00 administrative fee. For one day trips, the administrative fee is $50.00. If cancellation notice is received after 30 days prior to departure, no refunds will be issued. If the Museum cancels a trip due to inclement weather or insufficient enrollment, a full refund including the deposit will be issued. MNA is not responsible for airline cancellation penalties in the event of cancellation for any reason. This policy is followed per person without exception. We highly recommend purchasing trip cancellation insurance.
