Escalante Car Camp
Escalante Car Camp
October 2-7, 2017
Trip Leader: Don Keller & Heather Green
Cost: $900 Members/$1000 Non-Member
The Escalante River drainage, from the high Aquarius Plateau down to Glen Canyon, has been described as a “maze of cliffs and terraces…red and white domes, rock platforms gashed with profound canyons, burning plains barren even of sage–all glowing with bright color and flooded with blazing sunlight.” Yet within this sweeping landscape are the resources–water, grasses, arable soils and shelter–to encourage a long history of human adaptation. Archeologist Don Keller and wildlife biologist Heather Green will lead day hikes from our vehicle-based woodland camp into the canyon and rimrock landscapes at which 19th century explorer Clarence Dutton marveled. Venturing into the rugged terrain off the Burr Trail and Boulder-Escalante roads, hikes will range from the Circle Cliffs, The Gulch, Deer and Calf Creeks down to stretches of the main Escalante River canyon itself. We'll enjoy the comforts and evening fires of our vehicle base camp, and relish the invigorating and wide-ranging exploratory day hikes into a stunning landscape. Besides compelling scenery, this memorable sandstone region offers a diversity of natural environments, prehistoric Fremont Culture rock art and cliff structures, Mormon pioneering sites, and the surprises of wilderness exploration.
What to Expect: We will be traveling in a 12-passenger van with truck support, our trip beginning and ending in Flagstaff. Elevations in the Escalante area range from 4000 up to 9000 feet, with most areas around 6500 feet. Expect drives on dirt roads, some rough but not requiring 4-wheeling. Participants should be comfortable hiking and walking for much of each day. You will be asked to provide your health history and information prior to the trip. Please call (928) 774-5211 x222 with questions or concerns.
