Explore the fascinating way that magma is generated within the earth’s crust and mantle, how volcanic rocks are classified, and the general characteristics of volcanic eruptions. Next we will learn about plate tectonic evolution of Western North America during the past 70 million years and its relationship to volcanic activity in Northern Arizona. Our field trip will include a short hike into a 50,000 year old crater and a chance to collect rocks brought up all the way from the earth’s mantle by a volcanic eruption.
